Moving to Portugal costs money. How much exactly depends on the choices you make.

In this blog, we outline the main cost categories. No vague guesses, just a clear breakdown of what you should prepare for.

Housing: Rent, Buy, or Temporary Stay?

Buying a house outside the city is often more affordable than in the Netherlands. But additional costs can add up:

* Property transfer tax (IMT)

* Notary and legal fees

* Registration costs

Rental prices for a family start around €700 per month.

Want to rent something short-term for orientation—just a few months? Renting a holiday home outside the summer season (June–September) might be an option. Some owners are open to longer stays at reduced rates.

Paperwork & Preparation

Even before you officially rent or buy, you’ll need to take care of:

* Applying for a NIF (Portuguese tax number)

* Opening a Portuguese bank account

* Possible translation of documents

* Administrative fees for registrations

Add to this any costs for professional guidance, scheduling, and admin if you outsource these tasks.

Moving & Transport

What you bring with you greatly influences the cost:

* Moving costs range from €2,500 to €10,000

* Bringing a car? Consider taxes, import duties, and inspection fees

* Bringing pets also costs extra (vaccinations, microchips, transport)

Income & Getting Started

No job upon arrival? Expect to need a financial buffer for the first few months.

Do you already have a job or business? Then you'll face:

* Registration with Finanças (tax office)

* Accounting fees

* Potential business permits

It’s wise to budget for a 3 to 6 month buffer just in case.

Healthcare & Insurance

Until you’re registered in the public system (SNS), you’ll need insurance.

* Private health insurance: €50 to €200 per month

* International insurance is usually more expensive, but offers broader coverage

* Dental and pediatric care aren’t always included

If you continue your work or business from the Netherlands, register with the SVB for a WLZ assessment. This may allow you to keep your Dutch health insurance temporarily.

Don’t Forget: Unexpected Costs

Things rarely go exactly as planned.

A delayed purchase, extra hotel stays, or emergency help…

Set aside at least 10% extra budget for surprises—it’ll save you a lot of stress.
